Swedish innovations that may change the world - SSAB presents fossil-free steel at Nordbygg

2024-01-24

With the sustainability goal in focus, the development of construction materials is happening rapidly. Some of the innovations that have potential to reshape an emissions-heavy industry come from Sweden. One actor whose progress may affect the industry globally is the steel giant SSAB. It is only two years until its fossil-free steel will be available on the market. Meet them at Nordbygg, where they will make sure that visitors have the opportunity to feel, squeeze and find out all about the latest advances in steel.

SSAB’s goal to bring fossil-free steel to the market by 2026 is fast approaching. Through the so called HYBRIT technology, they are working to minimise the CO2 emissions. The HYBRIT technology is the result of a collaboration between the giants  LKAB, Vattenfall and SSAB. The result is a steel made of iron ore which is directly reduced with hydrogen gas and fossil-free electricity, so it is free from CO2 emissions from coal and coke compared to traditional production in a blast furnace.

– Fossil-free steel is no longer a product that only exists in our imagination. Together with our fossil-free partner PEAB, we can now tell you that it exists in walls and roofs produced by Rukki Construction for one of Wihlborg’s properties in Lund, says Mikael Petersen, Marketing Manager at SSAB.

SSAB wants to meet construction

In 2024, SSAB chooses to come back to Nordbygg with an exhibition area of 120 square feet.

– The development has charged ahead since we were last there in 2022. Nordbygg is an important investment and platform to us. Here, we can show ourselves and explain about all the exciting things occurring within fossil-free steel. Please come and visit our stand, says Petersen.

Apart from fossil-free steel, he would also like to encourage visitors to check out SSAB’s contribution to circular flow.

– We will be presenting SSAB Zero™, which is made by reclaimed scrap and produced with fossil-free electricity and biogas. This steel, which didn’t exist at the last Nordbygg, will play an immense role in promoting sustainability in the steel industry, Petersen explains.

Swedish companies with global innovations

– He who has anything new to showcase, which may inspire others, chooses Nordbygg as the place to show innovations. SSAB is one of many companies that give visitors some hope for the future by showcasing their progress. I see how more and more international visitors come here, and the Nordic innovation creativity is an important factor in that.  I want to encourage every visitor to take the opportunity to talk to the exhibitors about their innovations, often - as in the case of SSAB - there will be an opportunity to feel and squeeze the sustainable materials and products of the future, Lina Hann, Project Manager at Nordbygg, concludes.
